April Fishing Charters St Simons Island

Spring is here and the waters are finally starting to warm up. We had some nice fish in March mostly redfish and a few trout. The April fishing charters in St Simons Island have been pretty good, there’s been a lot of trout some being really nice keeper trout and also a good bit of smaller trout that are just a little bit to short to keep.  The redfishing in St Simons Island is still really good, there are a lot of big schools of redfish on the flats back in the rivers behind St Simons Island and Jekyll Island.

We had fishing charters all this week. At the beginning of the week the bite was hot, we had a couple of those days where it was an every cast trout bite. The water was clean and not moving to fast. Most of those fish were in 7-10 feet of water and water temps were in the 62-65 degree range. They really hit live shrimp under a popping cork the best and as far as artificial they hit the white pearl Berkley Gulp Shrimp the best, we never had any luck with any other colors this week.

Towards the end of the week the fishing for me got a little tougher with the full moon. The water got a little muddy and faster currents but was still ok at the top and bottom of the tides. My last two fishing charters of the week we had to cover a lot of water to find the fish.  We still managed to get a good bit of fish in the boat just had to work really hard for the ones that we caught, that seemed to be the same will all of the other captain’s I talked to.

Over the next week the trout bite should get hot again and the redfish should remain the same. We are catching a lot of whiting on our kids trips along with a few sharks. I made it out front of Jekyll Island beach a couple of days ago and we did see a couple of tripletail! There were several reports of a couple others seeing some tripletail with a few being caught.  Most of the tripletail this time of year are huge and not as many numbers of fish but by the end of the month they should be everywhere.
